Moth Art Prints
The Story Behind The Art - The Moth Collection:
I've always had such a deep love for moths. Butterflies tend to get so much of the attention, but I think moths are just as beautiful, and there's something about these often-overlooked little creatures that I've always found fascinating.
This collection actually started with just one painting, Luna Moth. Inspired by its name, I began exploring the symbolism of the moon, incorporating celestial elements into its wings and surrounding details. And once I'd finished it, I started imagining all the other possibilities!
I wanted to create something that contrasted the moon, which led me to the sun, and eventually to the idea of protection. That's how my Evil Eye Moth came to be, a little creature entirely from my imagination, combining the symbolism of the evil eye with the warmth and illumination of the sun.
From there, I started exploring another contrast: life and death. The Rosey Maple Moth became a celebration of life, growth, and the changing seasons, while the Death's Head Moth explored the darker beauty of death, decay, and transformation.
One of my favourite things about this collection is how the paintings connect visually, too. I intentionally carried certain elements of their compositions across the different moths, so that each one could stand beautifully on its own, alongside any of the others, or together as a complete collection.
What started as one little moth became this whole exploration of contrasting ideas, symbolism, and the beauty of creatures I've always loved.
✧ Luna Moth
I've always had such a love for Luna moths. There's something about their delicate wings and beautiful colours that feels almost otherworldly to me.
When I finally decided to paint one, I couldn't help but play with the magic already hiding in its name. Luna, meaning moon, inspired me to incorporate the phases of the moon right into the moth itself, blending its natural beauty with a little celestial magic.
I had so much fun exploring how I could bring those two worlds together, adding little touches of the natural and mystical elements I've always been drawn to. And although this was only the second acrylic painting I'd ever created, it ended up sparking the inspiration for an entire collection of moths!
✧ Evil Eye Moth
After creating my Luna Moth, I started imagining what a contrasting piece might look like. If one moth was inspired by the moon and the night sky, what would happen if I created another inspired by the sun?
That idea eventually led me to explore the symbolism of light, illumination, and protection. Being a bit of a witchy lady myself, the evil eye was one of the first things that came to mind, and I loved the idea of incorporating its protective symbolism into a creature entirely from my imagination.
I wanted to create something that could bring that sense of protection into someone's home through a piece of artwork, almost like a little talisman of its own. The marigolds were another meaningful addition, chosen for their associations with the sun, warmth, and protection.
And that's how my Evil Eye Moth came to be! A little blend of sunshine, symbolism, and the kind of whimsical magic I love bringing into my artwork.
✧ Rosy Maple Moth
When I started expanding my Moth Collection, I wanted to explore another set of contrasting ideas. This time, I began thinking about life and death, and how I could represent those ideas through two very different moths. And the Rosy Maple moth felt like the perfect choice to represent life!
With its beautiful pink and yellow colouring and the natural connection of trees in its name, it was already such a whimsical and beautiful little creature to work with. I was especially drawn to incorporating elements of maple trees into the artwork. Their leaves and little spinning seed pods, the ones we used to call helicopters as kids, felt like such a playful way to bring those ideas together.
There's something I love about taking inspiration from the natural world and finding ways to weave a little extra meaning and whimsy into it, without losing the beauty of the creature that inspired me in the first place.
✧ Death’s Head Moth
The Death's Head Moth was created as the darker counterpart to my Rosey Maple Moth, exploring the other side of the life and death pairing I'd been imagining for my collection.
I've always found something fascinating about the way nature can be both beautiful and a little unsettling, and the death's-head moth captures that contrast so wonderfully. With its naturally occurring skull markings, I knew it was the right choice for this painting.
The symbolism came together quite naturally. Bones, skulls, and mushrooms all felt like fitting additions, allowing me to really bring in those ideas of death, decay, and transformation through the beauty of the natural world.
I love that even though this piece has a much darker atmosphere than some of my other artwork, it still carries that same sense of wonder and curiosity that inspires so much of what I create.
